Municipal Conservation Area Guardia de La Paz (Ecuador)

Year: 2020

Carried out: GIZ, ICLEI and IUCN, with the technical support of the Fundación Oficina de Investigaciones Sociales y del Desarrollo (OFIS)

The Autonomous Decentralized Municipal Government (GADM) of Nabón decreed
the Municipal Conservation Area Guardia de la Paz based on the demands
from local communities.

This is an area of great importance due to its ecological function and the environmental services it provides. It is also a water recharge zone that supplies water to the population, contributes to hydroelectric power generation, and, due to its diverse flora and fauna and scenic beauty, constitutes a potential tourist destination.

The legal framework used to create the Conservation Area and the participatory approach are strategic for mitigating threats surrounding the region, especially mining.

Approximately 48,72% of the Nabón territory is declared a protected area due to its ecological importance. Of this percentage, 20,52% corresponds to the Guardia de la Paz Municipal Conservation Area, located between two areas of the Biosphere Reserve.
