Canoas joined ICLEI South America in 2017 and, since then, the city in Rio Grande do Sul has undertaken several actions to promote sustainable, equitable, and nature-based development. Among these, the city developed its Ecosystem Services Diagnosis. Conducted in partnership with ICLEI between July 2022 and March 2023, the Diagnosis consists of an assessment that provides the public administration with in-depth knowledge of the potential offered by the nature existing within the city limits and, based on this understanding, allows the design of efficient strategies to address the challenges of the territory and promote the integration of nature into urban planning.
With an integrated approach, the Diagnostic methodology includes mapping key stakeholders, a mobilization and communication strategy, spatial data collection, and a collaborative mapping workshop. The data obtained and maps generated are compiled in the Executive Summary document, which is also propositional, indicating potential and recommendations for windows of opportunity, showing that it is possible to innovate within the municipality's own context. It is expected that the document, made available to the City Hall and the technical team, can serve as input for future policies and studies.
