The next ICLEI meeting invites Amazonian cities to discuss sustainable economic development.

Over the past two years, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – has been conducting rich knowledge-sharing programs and... Networking among municipal public managers through their regional meetings. All geographic regions of the country are visited. In each edition, a municipality associated with the ICLEI network opens its doors to receive public authorities, representatives of the third sector, academia, private initiative and civil society, to discuss current and essential topics such as climate justice, biodiversity, energy transition, innovation for sustainability and many others, proposing solutions to the challenges of sustainable development from the perspective of cities.

In 2023, three editions have already taken place: in Natal/RN (ICLEI Northeast Regional Meeting), Palmas/TO (ICLEI National Meeting), and Porto Alegre/RS (Southern Regional Meeting). The next edition will be held in the Amazon. The municipality of Porto Velho, capital of Rondônia, will host ICLEI members and guests with the aim of promoting discussion on how to generate employment, income, and socioeconomic development at the local level in the Amazon region, in conjunction with environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and measures to mitigate and adapt to the effects of the climate emergency.

“These ICLEI Encounter series aim to foster an understanding of the main issues related to sustainable development within the scope of local public policies. We enable the exchange of experiences through projects implemented in Brazil, and the strengthening of technical and institutional capacities so that public managers can transform the challenges of their cities into action plans that bring results to municipalities and citizens. We clearly see an increase in the number of ongoing programs in municipalities, access to green financing lines, through ICLEI's articulation. In addition to significant exchanges between public managers as a result of these moments provided by the ICLEI Encounter cycles that circulate throughout the Brazilian regions,” explains Rodrigo Perpétuo, executive secretary of ICLEI in South America.

The 2nd ICLEI Amazon Meeting will be a joining of forces in support of the Amazon region.

The meeting takes place in the wake of important events such as the "Amazon Summit," the "Amazon Cities Forum," the "International Conference on the Amazon and New Economies," and many others that aim to foster cooperation for development in the Legal Amazon region, all of which have the active participation of ICLEI and cities associated with the institution. The proposal is to encourage the continuation of work on the agendas already underway.

The 2nd ICLEI Amazon Regional Meeting will serve as a milestone for the realization of 1st Porto Velho Sustainability Forum, the second session of 2023 of Forum of Pan-Amazonian Cities (FCPA) and of Amazon Regional Meeting of the CB27 Forum, a combined effort to mobilize and engage Amazonian cities in discussing sustainable economic development, encouraging the leadership of local governments.

1st Porto Velho Sustainability Forum

Under the auspices of the Porto Velho Development Agency (ADPVH) and in partnership with relevant entities such as ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, the event aims to foster crucial discussions around sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and combating climate change. Through panel discussions, technical visits, and the participation of renowned speakers, Porto Velho will position itself as a protagonist in the search for innovative solutions and practices for contemporary challenges. Beyond the educational aspect, the event will bring economic and social benefits, promoting the city as a benchmark in sustainability and attracting investments and strategic partnerships. This initiative not only raises Porto Velho's profile on the national and international stage but also strengthens its commitment to a more sustainable and prosperous future for its population.

Pan-Amazonian Cities Forum (FCPA) This is a project promoted by ICLEI South America, with support from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, through the Regional Program for Energy Security and Climate Change (EKLA). Its objective is to strengthen cooperation and sustainable urban development in the cities of the Amazon region of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, through the exchange of experiences, the development of a common agenda, and the capacity building of local governments to increase their influence on environmental issues at the local, regional, and international levels, while also considering the particularities of each city within the pan-Amazonian territory. Among its periodic meetings, the FCPA has already promoted discussions on topics such as bioeconomy, green job creation, forest protection, and access to clean energy.

Amazon Regional Meeting 2023 of CB27

The CB27 Forum brings together Secretaries of the Environment from Brazilian capitals and the Federal District with the aim of strengthening the coordinated action of the Environment Secretariats, promoting the exchange of experiences in urban sustainability, and advancing cutting-edge environmental agendas. This intermunicipal dialogue is established through National and Regional Meetings, held periodically and hosted by the capitals. The initiative has the financial and institutional support of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and the institutional support of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability for its activities.
