ICLEI South America publicly expresses its repudiation of the criminal, anti-democratic, unconstitutional acts against the Democratic Rule of Law that occurred on January 8, 2023, in Brasília. 

With over 2,500 members worldwide, we are the leading global association of local and subnational governments dedicated to sustainable development. We have represented states and municipalities for 32 years, and our work is guided by building a path to sustainability while respecting the democratic rules of the rule of law, wherever we are. 

Brazil has been our home since the founding of ICLEI, and our members in the country demonstrate the construction of a democratic path to sustainability. We understand that public debate is the foundation for building a strong democracy, enabling the implementation of policies that improve the country and guarantee social justice. Any attack on democracy cannot be tolerated.

In this regard, we advocate that those responsible for the invasion and destruction of the headquarters of the three branches of the Brazilian federal government be rigorously investigated and that those directly and indirectly responsible be punished to the full extent of the law. 

The election results are final and must be respected.
