Pernambuco will host the fourth participatory workshop of the National Urban Afforestation Plan.

Pernambuco will host, this Friday (04), the Regional Workshop of the National Urban Afforestation Plan (PlaNAU) focused on the Northeast region. The activity is part of the participatory process of building the plan, conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA) with technical support from ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. The workshop has the support of the Recife City Hall and the Government of Pernambuco, in addition to the participation of representatives from various public institutions, social organizations, professional councils and area specialists.

The PlanNAU will be launched during COP30 in Belém and represents an unprecedented effort of listening and collective construction aimed at improving green areas in Brazilian cities. Regional workshops are one of the pillars of this journey, focusing on incorporating territorial specificities and strengthening urban environmental governance.

The event will bring together public authorities, researchers, civil society organizations, and professionals from the fields of urban planning, architecture, forestry, and sustainability. The objective is to collaboratively build guidelines and contributions for the national plan, integrating regional diagnoses and local experiences into the country's urban climate strategy. “This process allows for the identification of gaps, such as funding possibilities, seedling production, monitoring technologies, etc. Furthermore, it promotes the collection of best practices and encourages the exchange of knowledge between municipalities and states, allowing successful initiatives to be replicated or adapted, based on guidelines that will be outlined in the plan,” explains Léa Gejer, Technical Coordinator of ICLEI Brazil.

The Government of the State of Pernambuco has been associated with ICLEI since 2019, and partnered with the organization for the launch of... Climate PE platform, a tool for compiling data and guiding actions to address climate change in municipalities in Pernambuco. The city of Recife has also been associated with ICLEI since 2015 and has already carried out relevant work such as Local Climate Action Plan (PLAC), in addition to having been the first city in Latin America to be chosen for the creation of climate disaster insurance..

Hosting the regional workshop of the PlanNAU reinforces Pernambuco's position as one of the Brazilian states most committed to urban sustainability. “Hosting the workshop is an important step for our management at Semas. This initiative strengthens urban afforestation actions and expands the reach of the Plantar Juntos Program, which works directly on the recovery of the state's native vegetation. The exchange of experiences with other states and sectors is fundamental to improving public policies and defining more clearly the role of each federative entity in this strategic agenda for the future of cities and the environment,” highlights the Secretary of Environment, Sustainability and Fernando de Noronha, Daniel Coelho.
