This document presents a synthesis of the results obtained in the Ecosystem Services Diagnosis of Belém, as part of the Nature-Based-Cities: Biodiversity and Climate Resilience for Urban Development (NBCities) Project, implemented by ICLEI South America and funded by the Global Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Fund. The NBCities project sought to promote the integration of biodiversity conservation and climate action agendas into the local policies of the city of Belém, Pará.
The concept of Ecosystem Services (ES) refers to the direct and indirect benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. Human actions impact ecosystem conditions and, consequently, the provision of ecosystem services. In this sense, local governments are particularly important in promoting sustainable, equitable, and nature-based development. The ES Diagnosis consists of an assessment of the Ecosystem Services provided in the territory, as well as aspects of land use and occupation, providing decision-makers with a clear and accessible tool to promote the integration of nature into urban planning.
