Impact and savings of public resources resulting from the electrification of the bus fleet.
O Sustainability Indicator System for Public Transportation in the city of Porto Alegre This is a study on the impact and savings of public resources that the electrification of the bus fleet would generate in Porto Alegre. The initiative takes into account public spending on health due to pollution-related problems, among other indicators. This is one of four projects from civil society organizations selected by Action Fund Brazil to implement climate action in their territories based on data from the Environmental Insights Explorer platform – Google EIE.
The study examined three scenarios for the electrification of the entire bus fleet (2023, 2036, and 2050). Financial savings indicators were created, considering the costs inherent to pollution and health impacts, as well as the cost of acquiring electric buses, among other factors. The opinions of public transport users and the definition of priority routes for electrification were also collected. The study highlights the importance and feasibility of considering electrification as a way to save public spending, avoid greenhouse gas emissions, and consequently improve public health conditions.
