The City Hall of Belo Horizonte, in partnership with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, is holding the 3rd Edition of [event name] between October 25th and 27th. International Seminar on Food and Nutritional Security. With the theme 'The Transformative Power of Sustainable Food Systems', the intention is to discuss the need for a more ecological, healthy, democratic and sustainable food system in all its aspects: from production to accessibility to consumption, and from marketing to social inclusion.

Held periodically by the City Hall since 2017, through the Sub-Secretariat of Food and Nutritional Security (Susan/PBH), it always takes place in October in celebration of World Food Day and aims to provide training, disseminate knowledge and network strategic agents to strengthen sustainable and fair food systems, based on the principles of agroecology, adequate food and food sovereignty and security.

“"The consolidation of sustainable, fair, healthier, circular and resilient food systems "This needs to be the objective pursued by different political, social, and economic actors, in both national and international contexts. The impacts of the current model have caused social and environmental damage throughout its cycles, which include the production, distribution, access, and consumption of food," states Rodrigo Perpétuo, executive secretary of ICLEI South America.

ICLEI has been developing a series of programs aimed at offering its members pathways to improve food compliance in their municipalities. And, in line with this purpose, ICLEI invites its members to... 2nd ICLEI Minas Gerais Regional Meeting which will take place on October 25th, starting at 2 PM, as part of the program of III International Seminar on Food and Nutritional Security in Belo Horizonte.

“Actively participating in this meeting implies being attentive to the objectives inherent in the need to implement public policies aimed at more sustainable Food Systems, focused on the preservation of natural resources at all stages, the production of healthier foods, the strengthening of the local production and marketing network, the encouragement of conscious consumption and the reduction of waste, thus expanding the population's access to healthy foods in adequate quantities,” reinforces Perpétuo.

III International Seminar on Food and Nutritional Security in Belo Horizonte

The event was planned to encompass three thematic axes: (I) experiences and perspectives on tackling hunger, (II) the role of local governments and international organizations in supplying large urban centers from a Global South perspective, and (III) sustainable food systems as promoters of climate justice. The program will include conferences, panels, lectures, thematic sessions, and presentations of experience reports and research. “It is extremely important that governments and organized civil society reflect on and seek solutions to address hunger and the various challenges associated with food insecurity, including concerns related to climate change. Our focus is on building equitable food systems that not only guarantee access to healthy food, but also promote ethical and respectful relationships between consumers, producers, and the environment. It is known that the most vulnerable communities, such as Black, Indigenous, and marginalized populations, are the most affected by the consequences of climate change on food systems. Therefore, this is precisely the purpose of the third edition of the Seminar: to promote meaningful discussions and debates that comprehensively address these challenges,” highlights the Undersecretary of Food and Nutritional Security of the Municipality of Belo Horizonte, Darklane Dias.
