Continuing the trend of the last two years, which saw the adoption of major global agreements and campaigns such as the SDGs, the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the New Urban Agenda, events throughout 2017 will focus on implementing practical actions aimed at achieving the goals set out in these sustainability frameworks.

Workshops on “Local Implementation of Global Sustainability Agendas” in Brazil and Colombia – ICLEI South America and a number of partners are promoting workshops on “Local Implementation of Global Sustainability Agendas” in Brazil and Colombia during February and March, respectively. These workshops will be offered to municipal technical staff and representatives of strategic stakeholders, such as civil society organizations, funding agencies, and representatives of state and municipal governments, to map out a roadmap for implementing the goals set out in global sustainability agreements – such as the SDGs, the Paris Agreement, and the New Urban Agenda – at the local level. In February, the event is held in partnership with the Rio+ Centre and the Sustainable Cities Programme, and has the support of the German Development Cooperation and the partnership of the Compact of Mayors and the Covenant of Mayors for Energy and Climate.

9th National Meeting of CB27 – The Forum of Secretaries of the Environment of Brazilian Capitals – CB27 will meet in Salvador from March 14th to 16th. In its 9th edition, this will be the first meeting after the municipal elections, which resulted in the renewal of most mayors and municipal teams in the country's capitals. Each meeting generates a joint declaration from the managers, in which they evaluate the progress made in the environmental management of their cities and reinforce commitments to more ambitious goals.

Regional Platform for the Reduction of Disaster Risk in the Americas (PR17)/UNISDR – Montreal, Canada.
Following the establishment of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the meeting of the Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas, to be held in Montreal, Canada, will be the first opportunity for governments and stakeholders from the Americas to discuss and agree on a Regional Action Plan to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

"The Future of Cities" Debate Series Organized by the Envolverde Institute, a civil society organization that produces journalism focused on sustainability issues, and supported by ICLEI South America and Unibes Cultural. Among the main objectives of this series of events are: to discuss topics with little visibility for society that are fundamental to building a more sustainable society; to bring together experts, managers, and representatives of society to address these themes in light of existing public policies; and to disseminate best practices in the field of sustainable development policies. Six meetings will be held at the Unibes Cultural space in São Paulo.

4th Meeting of Municipalities for Sustainable Development – EMDS – Organized by the National Front of Mayors (FNP), in partnership with Sebrae, the EMDS is a biennial event that brings together mayors from all over the country, as well as ministers, parliamentarians, municipal and state secretaries, researchers, students, and members of foreign delegations. In its fourth edition, held from April 24th to 28th in Brasília/DF, the EMDS aims to foster the construction and agreement of alternatives to address the serious fiscal situation of Brazilian municipalities. To this end, its central theme is "Reinventing the financing and governance of cities," which, over five days, will feature activities focused on promoting dialogue with the next generation of mayors.

Resilient Cities Congress It is the global forum on urban resilience and adaptation, which meets annually in Bonn, Germany. The series of conferences provides an international platform for sharing the latest information, best practices, challenges, and innovations to make cities more resilient. Since 2016, the event has also offered the opportunity to track local progress on resilience-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The results present an annual overview of the state of urban resilience, based on discussions and developments from previous years.

23rd Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP23) – This year, the annual conference focused on discussing climate change and curbing the rise in global average temperature will be held in Bonn, Germany, headquarters of the UNFCCC and the ICLEI World Secretariat. COP23 will be chaired by the Government of Fiji.

Looking ahead to next year
Held every three years, the ICLEI World Congress It brings together hundreds of local and subnational governments, government agencies, funders, and other partners from around the world to establish an agenda aimed at globalizing sustainability in cities. From June 19th to 23rd, 2018, the event will be held in Montreal, Canada.
It is the main meeting for cities and regions within the ICLEI Network that have been carrying out increasingly vigorous actions on the sustainable urban agenda, a space in which connections with colleagues are promoted, partnerships are fostered, and information, experiences, and best practices are exchanged.
