Osasco launches its 1st Greenhouse Gas Inventory (IEGEE)

On the morning of Monday (August 25th), the municipality of Osasco (SP), in partnership with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, officially launched its 1st Greenhouse Gas Inventory (IEGEE). The event, held in the event hall of the Osasco Commercial and Business Association (ACEO), marked an important step forward in the city's strategy to address the impacts of climate change and promote sustainable urban development.

The inventory is an essential tool that maps greenhouse gas emissions in strategic sectors of the city, such as transportation, solid waste, and energy. Based on this data, the municipality will be able to plan more effective public policies, strengthen the transition to a low-carbon economy, and attract investments focused on sustainable initiatives.

The launch was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Osasco, Lau Alencar, the Municipal Secretary of the Environment, Cláudio Henrique da Silva, the Executive Director of ICLEI Brazil, Rodrigo Corradi, and the technical advisor of ICLEI Brazil, Gustavo Pinto, who was responsible for presenting the methodology and results of the inventory. Representatives from the public and private sectors also participated, reinforcing the importance of the document as a planning and decision-making tool.

During the event, the main objectives of the inventory were highlighted: to provide a solid database for the formulation of environmental public policies, to identify opportunities for reducing pollutant gas emissions, and to engage the local community in building a sustainable future. The Osasco IEGEE represents a milestone for the city, which already has recognized sustainability initiatives such as the expansion of bike lanes, the adoption of electric buses, and solid waste management programs.

According to ICLEI experts, implementing the inventory not only helps mitigate the impacts of climate change, but also strengthens the municipality's commitment to global agendas for sustainable and resilient development. Furthermore, it allows Osasco to monitor its progress over time and adjust its policies more strategically, aligning economic growth, quality of life, and environmental preservation.

Deputy Mayor Lau Alencar emphasized that the inventory is a strategic tool to guide the municipality's decisions and ensure that Osasco is prepared for the challenges of the climate crisis, promoting actions that benefit the entire population.

ICLEI Brazil reinforced the role of local governments as key players in the climate agenda, highlighting that cities like Osasco have the capacity to transform complex challenges into concrete and replicable solutions.
