The Municipality of Cubatão formalized its membership in ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, expanding its work in favor of sustainable urban development and climate action. The signing of the membership agreement took place with the presence of Mayor César Nascimento, Deputy Mayor Andrea Castro, and the institutional representative of ICLEI Brazil in São Paulo, Ana Wernke.

With this initiative, Cubatão becomes part of a global network with more than 2,500 local and regional governments, connecting it to cities that implement innovative solutions to environmental, social, and economic challenges. This membership will allow the municipality access to programs, projects, and methodologies that support the transition to a more resilient and sustainable territory.

Membership in ICLEI enables Cubatão to strengthen public policies aligned with five strategic pillars: low-emission development, climate resilience, social equity, circular economy, and nature-based solutions. Furthermore, the municipality will be able to share experiences with other cities and participate in international initiatives that promote local sustainability.

“Cubatão’s entry into ICLEI reflects the city’s commitment to a more sustainable future. This partnership will allow for the exchange of experiences and the implementation of initiatives aligned with global best practices, maximizing the impact of local actions,” highlighted Ana Wernke, representative of ICLEI Brazil.

The commitment made by the City Hall also reinforces the importance of sustainable development in the Baixada Santista region, a strategic area for the economic growth of the state of São Paulo. With this agreement, Cubatão will be able to advance in areas such as sustainable urban mobility, environmental conservation, and innovation in solid waste management.
