Countdown to the 2nd ICLEI South Regional Meeting

With each new edition, the ICLEI Meetings have established themselves as a relevant space for discussions on the most important sustainability issues, from the perspective of public policies at the local level.

Governments associated with ICLEI and invited guests meet in an important and essential forum. High-quality debates, sharing of successful best practices in Brazil, and national and international trends for sustainable urban development. An enriching experience that contributes to the transformation of Brazilian municipalities into increasingly resilient, circular, and sustainable cities.

Between August 16th and 18th, we will be meeting in the beautiful city of Porto Alegre. Once again, the issue of the Climate Emergency and its consequences will be the theme of the plenary sessions. Innovation will also be a highlight of the event!

On August 16th, Farol Santander will host Demoday, the event that concludes the 2nd round of the acceleration program proposed by ICLEI Innovation. Five startups from southern Brazil will present their progress and be evaluated by a panel of experts with high academic standing and professional experience. The challenge for this edition was to present innovative and sustainable solutions within the theme of "Resilient and Circular Food Systems".

Porto Alegre, the host city of this meeting, was the first Brazilian municipality to respond to urban growth with a Master Plan at the beginning of the 20th century. And, in 2023, it will deliver to the citizens of Porto Alegre a new, updated proposal built on a participatory model. With this reference, we will discuss sustainable urban planning.

Simultaneously, the regional meeting of the C27 Forum is taking place, with presentations by the Secretaries of the Environment from other Brazilian capitals. Eleven capitals will be represented.

The climate issue will be highlighted in the program. How do climate forecasts contribute to planning in the face of climate phenomena, assisting public management in mitigation and adaptation actions? What is the importance of certifications for standardization and promotion of initiatives in favor of sustainable development? Cities associated with ICLEI will present successful experiences.

Smart Cities for the Climate: Using Data as a Tool for Sustainability discusses how data management and use can assist public administration in addressing and adapting to the climate crisis, as well as serving as a tool for developing fundamental studies, based on the case of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory of Porto Alegre and the Climate Change Indicators Panel of Curitiba.

Carbon Credit Market: Perspectives for States and Municipalities will address the advancement of the carbon credit market agenda at the local government level in Brazil. Another edition of the Dialogues for Resilience: multi-level articulation for financing resilient cities. And also, the recognition of Porto Alegre as a resilience hub by the Building Resilient Cities 2030 initiative (MCR 2030).

Startups and open innovation: disruptive solutions for sustainability. This space discusses the role of the open innovation environment as a catalyst for solutions to promote sustainability. It includes a presentation of ICLEI Innovation and a case study of the Food Systems journey in partnership with Porto Alegre, as well as ICLEI's partnership with Connected Places Catapult at the South Summit.

The 2nd Southern Regional Meeting of ICLEI Brazil is an event organized by ICLEI South America and from Porto Alegre City Hall, co-organized by Konrad Adenauer Foundation e CB27 Forum. It also has a partnership with MRV (Partner of ICLEI in 2023), and with the institutional support of European Union through Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, from the initiative Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030), ACA Brazil e CDP Latin America.
