Ecosystem Services Diagnosis of Belém (2025)
This document presents a summary of the results obtained in the Ecosystem Services Diagnosis of Belém, as part of the Nature-Based Cities Project: Biodiversity and Climate Resilience for Urban Development (NBCities), implemented by ICLEI South America and funded by the Global Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) Fund. The NBCities project aimed to promote the integration of biodiversity conservation and climate action agendas into the local policies of the city of Belém, Pará.
The concept of Ecosystem Services (ES) refers to the direct and indirect benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. Human activities impact ecosystem conditions and, consequently, the provision of ecosystem services. In this context, local governments play a particularly important role in promoting sustainable, equitable, and nature-based development. The ES Diagnosis is an assessment of the Ecosystem Services provided within the territory, as well as aspects of land use and land cover, offering decision-makers a clear and accessible tool to drive the integration of nature into urban planning.
