ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is promoting the web series “Local Voices” today on its website. YouTube channel. The goal is to make visible the actions taken by municipalities to conserve nature and strengthen the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC).
Municipal governments are strategic actors in nature conservation. The conservation units they manage connect natural habitats, protecting them sustainably, and offer benefits to city dwellers. These units encourage ecotourism, generate employment and income; provide access to potable water; ensure people's well-being; maintain air and soil quality; and prevent or reduce the risk of floods and landslides.
The first episode of the web series “Local Voices” presents the management of Municipal Conservation Units (UCMs) in Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG).
The municipality is located in the Serra do Espinhaço Biosphere Reserve, one of seven in the country. It has a rich biological diversity and combines areas of high endemism, rocky fields and abundant water resources, as well as historical, economic and cultural importance.
The municipality's development is linked to the historical activity of exploiting mineral resources in the Serra do Espinhaço mountain range. This aims to promote the well-being of the local population, conserve nature, and guarantee the supply of... ecosystem services, The city government encouraged the creation and consolidation of conservation units (CUs).
There are currently a total of four Conservation Units in the municipality, three at the municipal level and one at the state level – all included in the National Registry of Conservation Units (CNUC).
The protected areas in Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG) minimize the loss of endemic species, carry out educational and socio-environmental and cultural development programs, and provide multiple ecosystem services to society, such as water supply.
Another important factor is that protected areas generate local income due to the development of ecotourism, ensuring the financial sustainability of actions to protect natural habitats, and also contributing to the governance and connectivity of protected areas within the biosphere reserve.
Local Protected Areas
This web series is produced within the framework of the regional project Local Protected Areas, which aims to provide municipal governments in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru with better conditions to conserve biodiversity through the effective and equitable management of protected areas and other conservation measures.
Local Protected Areas is implemented in Brazil by the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) and by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH In partnership with ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) supports the regional project through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
