The ICLEI Minas Gerais Regional Meeting aims to discuss the challenges related to sustainable development and the reconversion of mined territories with a focus on the future. 

The first two days of the event will be held in Belo Horizonte, within the Minas Gerais Municipalities Congress at Expominas. The plenary session "Low Carbon Development," which opens the event, is one of the confirmed activities. This session will present the first results of the development of the Minas Gerais State Climate Action Plan, the UK's priorities regarding the carbon neutrality agenda, and the Race to Zero campaign, linked to an innovation plan for decarbonization in Minas Gerais.

On the third day, the plenary session will feature the participation of the CEO of the Eden Project, David Harland, who will deliver the keynote address at the panel discussion to be held on the morning of the 3rd, at the Dom Cabral Foundation in Nova Lima. Located in Cornwall, England, the Eden Project has become an international benchmark for the reconversion of mined territories. The Director of Climate, Energy and Low Carbon at the British Embassy in Brazil, Richard Ridoult, will also be present in Nova Lima. He will participate in discussions with the mayor of Ouro Preto, Ângelo Oswaldo de Araújo Santos, as well as representatives from mining municipalities. 

Also on Friday at 4:30 PM, there will be training sessions related to the application of the Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration (CFEM) and about the Innovation Observatory for Sustainable Cities (OICS). 

On the last day of the Meeting, participants will visit the São Sebastião de Águas Claras District, popularly known as Macacos, in the municipality of Nova Lima, with the aim of learning about and experiencing the municipality's ecotourism policies.

Other Forests

One of the highlights of the Gathering is the closing session: a masterclass with Gilberto Gil and a special appearance by Benki Ashaninka, an indigenous leader, political and shamanic representative of his people. Ashaninka, whose tribe is located in Acre. His work is internationally recognised and, together with his people, he was responsible for planting more than two million trees in the Amazon. The duo's performance is scheduled for the last day of the event at the Grand Theatre Palácio das Artes. 

The event will also feature the opening of the "Indigenous Peoples" exhibition by photographer Ricardo Stuckert, which will remain open to the public until June 13th. Both initiatives will have a unique presentation in Brazil, and all funds raised will be allocated to event costs and to planting and environmental education initiatives in the outskirts of Belo Horizonte.

The Other Forests Project proposes making Belo Horizonte a city committed to environmental issues, using culture as an element of social transformation and a combat against inequalities. In addition to ICLEI South America, the Contato NGO, the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute (Acre), and tourism companies from Belo Horizonte also support the project.

The ICLEI Minas Gerais Regional Meeting is organized by ICLEI South America and the Municipality of Nova Lima, with co-organization by Sebrae. It is sponsored by MRV, an ICLEI partner company in 2022, UrbBrasil, Anglo American, and supported by the State Environmental Foundation and the Government of Minas Gerais, the British Consulate in Minas Gerais, the Dom Cabral Foundation, the State Project for Productive Reconversion in Mined Territories, and Novo Olhar Sustentabilidade, which will calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of the meeting and offset them through the planting of seedlings. 

The Meeting also has the institutional support of the Espinhaço Institute, MCR 2030 (Building Resilient Cities 2030), Race to Zero, Race to Resilience, IBRAM (Brazilian Mining Institute), GCoM (Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy), CDP Latin America, AMIG (Association of Mining Municipalities of Minas Gerais) and Connected Places Catapult..
