Municipalities located in the Amazon Biome can now register for... Public Call for Proposals for the Climate Diplomacy and Local Governance in the Amazon Project, This initiative, funded by the European Union and implemented by GOPA and ICLEI South America, seeks to identify municipalities interested in strengthening their institutional capacities and expanding their role in the international climate agenda through training, mentoring, exchanges, and technical support.

As highlighted by Rodrigo Corradi, Deputy Executive Secretary of ICLEI South America, cities occupy a strategic position on the global climate agenda because they concentrate a large part of the population and socio-environmental challenges, being central elements for building solutions for the Amazon.

The selected municipalities will participate in a series of activities aimed at strengthening local climate governance, including diagnostics, climate planning, capacity-building programs, exchanges with Amazonian, South American, and European cities, as well as communication initiatives and greater integration into national and international cooperation forums. 

The expectation is to select at least 15 municipalities for direct participation in the project activities, and applications are open until August 23rd, and must be submitted exclusively through an electronic form. Municipalities located predominantly in the Amazon Biome, according to the criteria established in the Public Call, may participate.

Strengthening the urban Amazon in the climate agenda

The Climate Diplomacy and Local Governance in the Amazon Project stems from the recognition that the Amazon is also an urban territory. “Although it is known worldwide for its environmental importance, a large part of the Amazonian population lives in cities that face challenges related to infrastructure, sanitation, mobility, socio-environmental inequalities, adaptation to climate change, and sustainable development,” explained Hugo Salomão França, the specialist responsible for the overall management of the initiative.

In this context, the project seeks to strengthen the leading role of local governments in the development of climate public policies, expanding their technical capacity, promoting international cooperation, and encouraging the participation of municipalities in climate diplomacy processes.

Over approximately 19 months, the project will develop in-person and virtual activities involving mentoring, exchanges, knowledge production, support for climate planning, strategic communication, and institutional coordination between Amazonian municipalities and national and international partners. 

Among the expected benefits are the strengthening of the technical capacity of municipal administrations, greater access to cooperation networks, exchange opportunities, and support for the construction or improvement of local climate governance instruments.
