The Medellín-based public company (EPM) has formalized its participation in the ICLEI Network, aiming to strengthen ties in the field of sustainability. This partnership, based on a solid commitment to environmental preservation, provides EPM with privileged access to a wide range of resources and expertise. These resources include training opportunities, specialized tools and funding options, as well as the chance to connect with a global network of leading sustainability figures and experts in sustainable development. This association also offers access to exclusive resources to support the achievement of EPM's sustainability goals. Furthermore, it allows for the sharing of the organization's best practices with other local and regional entities worldwide, promoting a mutual exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, EPM benefits from funding and collaboration opportunities to boost sustainability projects, as well as recognition opportunities through international challenges, awards, campaigns, and events.

Regarding its alignment with the global sustainability agenda, EPM has been a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact since 2006. The company also actively participates in the activities of the Global Compact Network in Colombia and the Antioquia region. The convergence of the companies that make up the EPM Group with the 2030 Agenda, and in particular with the Sustainable Development Goals, represents a solid commitment to contributing, within the business sphere, to addressing the global challenges that arise at the local level in the geographical areas where the Organization is present. This is done in line with public agendas at the national, regional, and municipal levels. Furthermore, EPM is part of the Caring for Climate initiative and has supported specific commitments on the national climate agenda, such as the Carbon Neutral Electricity Sector Alliance, which currently has only 11 member companies. It is worth highlighting that EPM is one of seven companies in Colombia that specifically contribute to Colombia's Nationally Determined Contribution until 2030. The company is also an active member of the Antioquia Regional Climate Change Node and participates in the inter-institutional thematic committee on climate change of the Municipality of Medellín. Furthermore, EPM is involved in the Association of Carbon Market Agents in Colombia, known as Asocarbono.

Since 2018, the EPM Group has had a Climate Change Strategy (also known as an Integrated Business Climate Change Management Plan) from which initiatives related to the climate agenda are developed; among the main ones are:

  • The annual estimate of the greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
  • External verification of EPM's GHG emissions inventory for the year 2016.
  • External verification of the GHG emissions inventory for the EPM Group corresponding to the year 2022 (to be carried out between September and December 2023).
  • The formulation, implementation, registration, and monitoring of projects to reduce or capture greenhouse gas emissions, registered under different carbon standards, which allow the generation of carbon credits (or Emission Reduction Certificates) understood as a product derived from climate change.
  • Initiatives aimed at energy efficiency, sustainable mobility (which includes electric vehicles in conjunction with natural gas-powered vehicles) and energy generation from renewable energy sources (for self-sufficiency or for supply to customers and users).
  • The inclusion of processes and scenarios related to climate variability and change in the business methodology for comprehensive risk management.

For more details on these actions, you can consult the chapter dedicated to climate change, located in the Sustainable Management section. EPM Group Sustainability Report for the year 2022.

It is important to highlight that EPM, founded on August 6, 1955, has a 68-year history in the sector.
