João Pessoa is taking another step towards sustainable mobility with the implementation of strategies focused on the electrification of public transport. As part of the TUMI E-Bus Mission, a global initiative supporting cities in their transition to electric buses, ICLEI South America is in João Pessoa to strengthen the city's technical and institutional capacity in this process.
The mission focuses on structuring a suitable fleet electrification model, considering technical, operational, regulatory, and infrastructure challenges. Furthermore, it seeks to leverage best practices from other Brazilian cities, promoting an exchange of experiences that can accelerate the adoption of effective and sustainable solutions.
João Pessoa has been associated with ICLEI since 2017 and has expanded its work on climate and environmental issues over the years. The capital of Paraíba actively participates in the CB27 Forum, a space that brings together municipal environment secretaries from Brazilian capitals, in addition to developing its Climate Action Plan in 2023, drawn up in partnership with ICLEI South America, WayCarbon and the IDB. In 2023, João Pessoa also had a presence at COP28 in Dubai as part of the delegation curated by ICLEI.
The ICLEI visit to the city is being led by Letícia Borges, Project Analyst at ICLEI South America, who is following the developments of the TUMI E-Bus Mission and providing technical support to the municipal administration in defining guidelines for the electrification of public transport.
The mission includes the participation of Victor Gomes, Director of Transport, Marcilio Pedro Siqueira Ferreira, Superintendent of Mobility, Cinthyonara Targino, Head of the Statistics and Technological Innovation Section, Iuri Amazonas, Technical Advisor to the Secretariat for Climate Change, and Francisco José Bezerra de Alcântara, Head of the Bus Division of the Secretariat for Urban Mobility of João Pessoa.
About the TUMI E-Bus Mission
The TUMI E-Bus Mission is a global initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by GIZ, and coordinated by a group of international organisations, with the aim of accelerating the implementation of electric buses in cities in the Global South. The mission promotes technical solutions, knowledge exchange, and regulatory support so that municipalities can structure their own energy transition models in public transport.
