The City of Fortaleza, through its Municipal Secretariat of Urbanism and Environment (SEUMA), presented today (11) to representatives of the Municipal Forum on Climate Change of the City (FORCLIMA), its Municipal Policy for Low-Carbon Urban Development. The launch was very well received by those present who arrived at the Assembly Hall of the Municipal Palace around 2 pm. Mayor Roberto Cláudio signed the policy, which now goes to the City Council.

The development of the policy framework was carried out with the participation of FORCLIMA throughout 2015, during the development of the City's Low Carbon Action Plan. This process was based on the Environmental Policy of the Municipality of Fortaleza and its 1st Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory, carried out within the scope of the project. Urban LED's.

The Low Carbon Urban Development Plan and Policy focuses on sectors that represent a greater potential for greenhouse gas emissions in the Municipality, such as the Transportation and Waste sectors, in measures to reduce these emissions and promote sustainable development in the city.

The forwarding of the Low Carbon Urban Development Policy represents a very important moment, which formalizes the actions carried out by SEUMA over the last two years, since the beginning of the implementation of the Urban LEDS project (Promoting Low Carbon Urban Development Strategies), funded by the European Commission and implemented by ICLEI and UN-Habitat. Fortaleza is one of the Model Cities, along with Recife, selected to participate in the global project in Brazil and test the Green Climate Cities methodology, which recommends a series of actions such as leadership engagement, the creation of Climate Change Forums, and the preparation of greenhouse gas inventories.

Mayors' Compact

Another important step taken by the City Hall of Fortaleza was its commitment to the Compact of Mayors. On the eve of the 21st United Nations Climate Change Conference, where countries from all over the world will meet to reach a global climate agreement, the Mayor of Fortaleza, Roberto Cláudio, joins municipal leaders from around the world to strengthen the fight against climate change.

The Compact is the largest global coalition of mayors and municipal leaders addressing climate change through voluntary commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, monitoring their progress, and preparing to deal with the impacts of climate change. Led by the global city networks C40, ICLEI, and UCLG, the Compact has important supporters: Michael Bloomberg, as Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cities and Climate Change, and UN-Habitat.
