ICLEI mourns the death of the former mayor of Teresina, Firmino Filho

Firmino Filho, former mayor of Teresina, died this Tuesday (06/04) at the age of 57.

Firmino da Silveira Soares Filho was an economist, a politician affiliated with the PSDB, and a professor at the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI). He served four terms as the mayor of Teresina, first being elected in 1996 at the age of 33, and re-elected in 2000. His other terms were in 2012 and 2016.

Under your leadership, the city joined ICLEI in 2017. During its journey with the Network, the capital of Piauí participated in prominent events such as COP25 and MOBILIZE 2019. Furthermore, it was present at “BIO2020: Brazilian Perspectives for the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework” and contributed to the organisation of the 1st Hot Cities Forum.

In 2018, Teresina hosted the XIV National Meeting of CB27, which discussed innovation and local climate solutions with the environmental secretaries of Brazilian capitals. During the meeting, Mayor Firmino Filho signed the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Through the covenant, Teresina City Hall committed to diagnosing the city's climate crisis situation, setting targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and developing an action plan to meet these targets. For Firmino, the covenant aimed to demonstrate the municipality's commitment to the environment.

The former mayor also organised discussions for the implementation of actions related to sustainable development in the urban and rural areas of the capital of Piauí through the Teresina 2030 Programme.

Firmino also dedicated himself assiduously to the education of the Piauí capital, delivering results that improved the city's educational indicators, making it the country's capital with the best public primary education twice.

In paying this humble tribute, ICLEI stands in solidarity with family and friends, wishing them strength and fortitude.
