The municipality of Petrol Station, Petrolina, located in the interior of the state of Pernambuco, has an estimated population of 354,317 for the year 2020 according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and a population density of approximately 64 inhabitants/km². Situated in the São Francisco Pernambucano mesoregion, 500 km from Salvador and 700 km from Recife, Petrolina exerts regional influence due to its role as a link between the metropolitan areas. In terms of economic activities, Petrolina stands out in the production of wine and fruits, as well as tourism.

In 2021, the municipality joined the ICLEI Network, and subsequently formalized its commitment to... ACA Brazil (Alliance for Climate Action) in order to implement initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Also in 2021, representatives from Petrolina participated in the training "Municipal Inventories of Greenhouse Gas Emissions," the city participated in the LUPPA and, since that same year, has been reporting its data on the CDP-ICLEI Track platform.
