Associate since 2022

Associated with ICLEI in November 2022, the city of Francisco Morato seeks to strengthen its climate and environmental agenda.

The city in the São Paulo metropolitan region has over 170,000 inhabitants and works towards aligning the 2030 Agenda with the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of its public policies. It has already adhered to the following commitments: Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience, Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) Agenda, Green-Blue Municipality Program, and Smart Cities Program.

Furthermore, even without a formal commitment, Francisco Morato bases his work on the regulatory frameworks established by the UN: the World Humanitarian Summit, the Framework Convention on Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda, and the Paris Agreement.

The city, which has a legal framework for strengthening sustainable development, such as the Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Plan, has a Municipal Civil Defense that is constantly modernizing its monitoring and management of climate data. A partnership with the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Development (ABDI) includes 30 smart streetlights with cameras that also assist in monitoring flooding in the city's central area.

In 2022, it was one of three cities to participate in Decidadania project, with the formation of a Citizen Assembly. The initiative ended in February 2023. Also in 2022, the city of Francisco Morato hosted a Citizen Assembly focused on the question "How to build accessible basic sanitation for all?".

Francisco Morato's birthday is celebrated on March 21.
