ASSOCIADO SINCE 2021

The Province of Misiones stands out for its long track record of leadership in environmental matters. Proof of this is its guardianship of the largest continuous remnant of the Atlantic Forest, one of the richest natural areas on the planet and one of the most urgent biodiversity hotspots to be restored. For two decades, it has managed to completely halt deforestation. Misiones conserves 52% of the biodiversity of the entire Argentine Republic.

Thirty years ago, there was a Ministry of Ecology – the first in Latin America at the time – and five years ago, another for Family Farming, focused on crop rotation, soil care, and the use of agrochemicals.

In 2018, he created the Missionary Institute of Biodiversity (IMiBio) with the aim of establishing a strategic, scientific, and technological hub integrated into the educational, social, cultural, and economic spheres for the sustainable use of the natural heritage of the Province of Misiones.

The creation in 2020 of the Ministry of Climate Change – one of the first in Latin America – makes Misiones a strategic province for fulfilling the commitments undertaken by the National State upon ratifying the Paris Agreement. This Ministry develops and implements plans for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and for the mitigation, adaptation, and resilience to climate change. It is also responsible for coordinating policies on climate change and raising societal awareness about its relevance.

The Provincial Office for Climate Change is a tool launched in 2021 to work on the integration and coordination of different government areas with the aim of addressing this complex phenomenon and responding to the challenges of mitigation and adaptation within the framework of sustainable development.

In 2021, in conjunction with UCA, it organised the International Congress on Climate Change and Biodiversity, where it sought to place Latin America's perspective on the global agenda and present viable proposals to be implemented to solve the social, environmental, and economic crisis being experienced at this time.

With these actions, the province demonstrates its commitment to the Paris Agreement and its broad support for Argentina's SDGs.
