ICLEI, RAPS and other organisations develop thematic guides for the 2020 elections

Viewing the city through the lens of urban integration, sustainable development, innovation, and a focus on people and the environment is essential to making them more resilient and inclusive.

With the aim of helping candidates incorporate these principles into their proposals, RAPS has selected organisations for co-creation of the Themed Guides Prepares RAPS 2020. A total of seven documents were drafted. in partnership with widely recognised Brazilian organisations and institutes in their fields of expertise.

ICLEI South America was responsible for developing the content of the guide “Climate Change and Global Goals: Implementing the Sustainability Agenda”, which brings together the ten points that should be prioritised by cities to implement the climate and biodiversity agenda in their territories.

“Sustainability criteria must be represented in urban planning instruments to guide urban space with the valorisation of ecosystem services. Cities of the future need to be built in a way that enables harmony between city and nature, respecting river courses and green areas. ICLEI is very proud to support political leaders, current and future, committed to sustainable development,” declares Rodrigo Perpétuo, executive secretary of ICLEI South America.

“The content of the guides helps to think about how cities can contribute to building a fairer country, with more opportunities and respect for its diversity and natural resources,” states Mônica Sodré, executive director of RAPS.

The material is of great relevance to the debate on proposals and public policies aimed at Brazilian municipalities. The seven guides bring together concepts, problems, cases, and practical solutions in each area, addressing the role of municipalities in facing challenges.
