Between the 16th and 18th of August, the city of Porto Alegre (RS) will host the 2nd edition of ICLEI South Regional Meeting. The central theme of this event is “Urban Innovation for Sustainability” and it has How aim to highlight local and regional actions related to these themes. 

O 2nd ICLEI South Regional Meeting to bring together local governments associated with ICLEI and their partners (academia, the private sector, and civil society), as well as other stakeholders interested in sustainable urban development, to present and debate the implementation of key global development agendas and the contribution of Brazilian subnational governments in tackling the climate emergency, through collaborative actions based on 5 sustainable development pathways proposed by ICLEI: low-carbon; resilient; nature-based; circular; and equitable and people-centred. 

The participation of the 14 local governments associated with ICLEI in the South region is expected, as well as guests from other interested governments. The event will include the participation of technicians from the areas of urban innovation, food systems, urban mobility and others, in order to enhance the exchange of experiences among participants, supporting the proposal of solutions. 

Programming Highlights 

The event will feature panels and roundtables on data management and innovative urban planning tools, as well as Presentation of the results of the 2nd round of the ICLEI Innovation, the acceleration programme for Startups ICLEI, which had sustainable and circular food systems as its theme. As part of the programme, a session of the series also takes place Dialogues for Urban Resilience and Risk Management, which aims to create an expanded learning community with local governments from Brazil and Latin America on the challenges and opportunities of adaptation and management of risk and disaster at a local level, as well as disaster costs and ways of funding. Finally, representatives from ICLEI cities will be able to participate in a a technical visit that will demonstrate how the discussed topics can be applied to Urban development.

With a view towards fostering effective partnerships that allow participating associates to recognise and access suitable instruments to act and respond to their immediate demands, the Meeting also becomes a space for Networking that encourages cooperation, participation, inclusion and innovation. 

The 2nd ICLEI Brazil South Regional Meeting is organised by ICLEI South America and the Municipality of Porto Alegre, co-organised by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the CB27 Forum. It also has the partnership of MRV (ICLEI Partner in 2023), and the institutional support of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative, ACA Brasil and CDP Latin America.
