With the theme 'Reforestation – A Solution in the Fight Against Desertification Post-COP30', the Meeting has the support of Northeast Consortium and the government of the state of Bahia, through State Secretariat for the Environment — the event hosts. In addition to promoting reforestation as a solution, the objective of the meeting is to share experiences of actions already implemented or in the process of being implemented for climate adaptation and mitigation in the semi-arid region.
It will also be an opportunity to structure Belém's post-COP30 agenda with local and regional governments. “Through a collaborative effort involving all levels of government, the Northeast has strengthened its actions against desertification and is now positioning itself as a laboratory for solutions to global challenges,” explains Rodrigo Perpétuo, executive director of ICLEI South America. “The protection of the Caatinga, a unique biome in the world, is at the heart of the strategy of our Northeast Brazil Plan for Ecological Transformation, which was launched at COP-30. This meeting will be an opportunity to materialize the actions of this plan aimed at addressing the major environmental challenges of our time, based on science, the appreciation of traditional knowledge, and regional cooperation,” emphasizes Paulo Dantas, president of the Northeast Consortium and governor of Alagoas. The 5th Northeast Meeting is an event organized by ICLEI Brazil in partnership with the Northeast Consortium and the government of the state of Bahia, sponsored by MRV and with institutional support from KAS Brazil, the CB27 Forum, and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change.
