Buenos Aires, wThe capital of Argentina, it has approximately three million inhabitants and has been part of the ICLEI Network for over 15 years, being one of the oldest cities associated with ICLEI.
In 2015, it committed to the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, and in 2016 it joined the “Global Network of Cities Leaders in Sustainable Procurement” and the EcoMobility Alliance, both from ICLEI.
Buenos Aires was part of the ICLEI delegations at COP 23, held in Bonn, Germany. In addition, it participated twice in the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week, in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Salvador, Brazil, and also in the Global Climate Action Summit in 2018.
Buenos Aires was also a finalist in the One Planet City Challenge. Furthermore, it was the only city in Latin America to achieve an A rating on the unified climate reporting platform CDP-ICLEI.
The city published two case studies with ICLEI: “Efficiency energy Public buildings in Buenos Aires: the case of an office building.” in 2011 and “"Smart management of public lighting based on LEDs"” in 2018.
Within the framework of the EcoLogistics project: Low Carbon Freight Transport for Sustainable Cities, Buenos Aires presented its best practices in 2020 in an exchange of experiences with Rosario and Santa Fe. It was named a Lighthouse City of the program for being a benchmark in logistics and, therefore, strategic in monitoring the project.
In 2020, she participated in the Daring Cities global forum, in the session "Unfolding Mechanisms to Incorporate Sustainability into Public Infrastructure Procurement to Achieve Carbon Neutrality," presenting Buenos Aires' experience with sustainable public procurement.
He joined the ICLEI Transformative Action Programme (TAP) with the project “Development of a Metropolitan Platform for Renewable Energy Management,” which was selected for the mentoring process leading to TAP 2021. He then presented his project pitch at the ICLEI World Congress to a jury of financial institutions such as the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) and CABEI (Central American Bank for Economic Integration).
He presented the technical cooperation project “Climate Action: Tools for a sustainable and collaborative recovery” developed by the Union of Ibero-American Capitals (UCCI) and ICLEI, in which the cities of Bogotá and Barcelona participate.
