ICLEI South America and the National Front of Mayors (FNP) renewed their Cooperation Agreement on Monday (28th) to promote joint actions for the strengthening and local promotion of sustainability, urban quality, and environmental protection. The renewal of the partnership, which began in 2011, was formalised by the Mayor of Belo Horizonte and President of the FNP, Márcio Lacerda, the Mayor of Campinas, Jonas Donizette, and the ICLEI Manager of Policies and Strategies, Bruna Cerqueira, during the 70th General Meeting of the National Front of Mayors, in Campinas.
“People's concern for the quality of life where they live is very intense, so there's nothing better than engaging with international and national bodies, focusing on the municipality,” stated Mayor Jonas Donizette, celebrating the signing of the Cooperation Agreement. “It is through local action that the macro is built, for a more appropriate environmental preservation policy,” he highlighted.
Among the main items covered by the Agreement, organisations have committed to working together on the local implementation of International Sustainability Agreements – such as the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the New Urban Agenda – through workshops, training, and the sharing of knowledge and experiences. The Agreement also aims to expand dialogue spaces for municipal governments with the Federal Government and to provide support for the IV Meeting of Municipalities with Sustainable Development (IV EMDS), in Brasília, in April 2017.
On the occasion, registration opened for the IV EMDS, considered one of the largest events on urban sustainability in the country. This edition will focus on the theme “Reinventing City Financing and Governance”, and will be held from April 24th to 28th, 2017, at the Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, in Brasília/DF.
