ICLEI expresses its sorrow over the death of Goiânia's mayor, Maguito Vilela.

ICLEI South America regrets the death of the recently elected mayor of Goiânia (GO), Maguito Vilela, this Wednesday (13/01). Hospitalised since October 22nd to treat Covid-19, Vilela was battling a lung infection diagnosed last week.

Vilela has an extensive political career, having served as councillor, regional deputy, federal deputy, mayor, deputy governor, governor and senator.

Since 2007, the year it joined ICLEI, Goiânia has been increasing its engagement with the sustainability agenda. In 2018, the city signed the commitment to the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. and participated in ICLEI training sessions, in pursuit of improving the knowledge installed at the city hall to prepare the city's greenhouse gas inventory, one of the first steps towards climate compliance within the Pact. The active participation of representatives from Goiânia in the Regional Coordination of the Center-West and in the agendas of the CB27 Forum, including its recent adherence to the Green Flag project, is also worth mentioning.

Our condolences to the family and friends of Maguito Vilela, and to all the citizens of Goiânia.
