This is the first time ICLEI South America is holding a regional meeting in the State of Minas Gerais. And given such a warm welcome from Minas Gerais, two cities were chosen to host the event. On June 1st and 2nd, Belo Horizonte will host the conference, within the 37th Congress of Minas Gerais Municipalities, no Expominas. After that, the venue will be the Dom Cabral Foundation, in Nova Lima. As for the last one, on June 4th, participants will be mobilised around the theme of Ecotourism, having the opportunity to be in direct contact with the subject through a visit to the São Sebastião de Águas Claras District, popularly known as Macacos. Beforehand, the Consul of the United Kingdom in Minas Gerais, Lucas Brown, will give a lecture on the topic.
The main objective of the “1st ICLEI Minas Gerais Regional Meeting - Sustainable Development in the Redevelopment of Territories” is to promote high-level discussions, fostering the sharing of best practices, the presentation of successful experiences, and lessons learned from projects and other actions implemented in the regions. Thus, the Meeting aims to promote exchange between public administration bodies and entities, civil society, non-governmental organisations, companies, universities, and representative groups such as youth.
The “Low-Carbon Development” Plenary, which opens the event, is one of the confirmed activities. During this session, the State's Climate Compliance Plan, the UK's priorities regarding the net-zero agenda, and the Race to Zero campaign linked to an innovation plan in Minas Gerais will be presented. Another confirmed session is "Economic Diversification and Territorial Reconversion," the theme of the I Minas Gerais Meeting, alongside practices that have used Nature-Based Solutions for urban problems.

Other Forests
One of the highlights of the Gathering is the closing session: a masterclass with Gilberto Gil and a special appearance by Benki Ashaninka, an indigenous leader, political and shamanic representative of his people. Ashaninka, whose tribe is located in Acre. His work is internationally recognised and, together with his people, he was responsible for planting more than two million trees in the Amazon. The duo's performance is scheduled for the last day of the event at the Grand Theatre Palácio das Artes.
The event will also feature the opening of the "Indigenous Peoples" exhibition by photographer Ricardo Stuckert, which will remain open to the public until June 13th. Both initiatives will have a unique presentation in Brazil, and all proceeds will be allocated to the event's costs and for environmental planting and education initiatives in the outskirts of Belo Horizonte.
The Other Forests Project proposes making Belo Horizonte a city committed to environmental issues, using culture as an element of social transformation and a combat against inequalities. In addition to ICLEI South America, the Contato NGO, the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute (Acre), and tourism companies from Belo Horizonte also support the project.

The 1st ICLEI Minas Gerais Regional Meeting is organised by ICLEI South America and the Municipality of Nova Lima, with co-organisation by Sebrae. It is sponsored by MRV, a partner company of ICLEI in 2022, the State Foundation for the Environment and Government of Minas Gerais, UrbBrasil, the British Consulate, and Anglo American., State Project for Productive Reconversion in Mined Territories and Novo Olhar Sustentabilidade, which will calculate the meeting's greenhouse gas emissions and offset them by planting saplings. This partnership for CO2 Free Event Certification already took place during the 1st National Meeting of ICLEI Brazil, held in March, in Recife, and is expected to be repeated at ICLEI's upcoming regional meetings.
