National Strategy of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM)

Brief project description: This initiative aimed to strengthen the efforts of Colombian local governments in combating climate change, promoting capacity building and the development of initiatives that will lead to compliance with the commitments made by cities and municipalities adhering to the Global Covenant of Mayors. It also fostered Governance for Climate Action, Capacity Building and Knowledge Management, the Development of Technical Inputs, and a Communications Strategy.

Implementation period: 2022-2024

Funders: Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy 

Implementing organizations: National coordinators Asocapitales and Fedemunicipios and ICLEI as technical coordinator

Territory(ies) where it was implemented: Villavicencio, Florencia and the Municipalities of the Functional Territorial Region of Climate Change (RFTCC): Tópaga, Mongua, Monguí, Corrales, Floresta, Gameza, Beteitiva, and Busbanzá

Products developed:

  • Strengthening technical capacities for climate change management at the local level in the preparation of GHG inventories
  • Virtual training in Spanish open to all GCoM cities in Colombia.
  • High-level virtual events with the participation of mayors who are members of GCOM

Key results:

  • Greenhouse Gas Inventories (IGEI) for the 8 municipalities of the Functional Territorial Region of Climate Change (RFTCC), Villavicencio and Florencia
  • Comprehensive Climate Mitigation Action Plan for the 8 municipalities of the Functional Territorial Region of Climate Change (RFTCC), Villavicencio and Florencia
