The member city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the winner of the 9th edition of the ITDP's annual Global Sustainable Transport Award in 2014. The city was recognized for its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for urban improvements made, especially for pedestrians and cyclists.
Last year, Buenos Aires installed a new bus rapid transit system on the city's main avenue, Avenida 9 de Julio. The municipality replaced several lanes that had previously been used by all types of vehicles with dedicated public transportation, thus improving the quality of life for bus users. The fastest bus line has 17 stations, 11 lines, and serves 200,000 passengers daily.
In addition, the city implemented several measures to encourage residents to switch from individual transportation to alternatives. These actions included adding 23 kilometers of faster buses, the 'Metrobus Sur' project, and transforming various areas of the city center into pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly environments.
