Youth Climate Action

O Youth Climate Action This is an ICLEI initiative in partnership with Brazilian local governments to identify, recognize, and support youth-led projects focused on climate adaptation, climate justice, and territorial resilience. Inspired by the Brazilian concept of "mutirão" – a community gathering to solve collective challenges – and aligned with the self-determined contributions discussed in the context of COP30, the program integrates the global movement. Town Hall COP and connects local agendas to the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The initiative involves young people, collectives, schools, and associations operating in the partner municipality, whose proposals offer concrete solutions to challenges such as floods, droughts, heat waves, food insecurity, and biodiversity loss. The winning initiatives receive technical mentoring, visibility in ICLEI publications and events, and are integrated into the Brazilian narrative of subnational climate action leading up to COP30 in Belém (PA).

Products developed:

  • Municipal public calls for youth-led climate initiatives;
  • Technical mentoring and institutional strengthening programs for the selected projects;
  • A national publication systematizing the winning experiences and initiatives of each edition;
  • Regional meetings, workshops and climate mobilization activities integrated into ICLEI Brazil Meetings;
  • A network of community-based initiatives focused on climate adaptation and social justice.

 

Key results:

  • Youth leadership recognized and supported in multiple Brazilian territories;
  • In Campinas (SP), three projects were awarded prizes during the 2nd ICLEI Southeast Regional Meeting, in June 2025;
  • Integration between youth, local governments and civil society organizations;
  • Dissemination of initiatives with impacts on food security, urban agriculture, biodiversity, and social inclusion;
  • Direct contribution to the participatory legacy of COP30 in Brazil.
